Detailed Everest Three High Passes Trek Experience

Arrival in Kathmandu and Trek Preparation

Your journey begins in Kathmandu at 1,400 meters. After arrival, you are transferred to your hotel and welcomed by the Sole Encounters Adventures team. Time is provided for rest, final equipment checks, permit preparation, and a detailed trek briefing. Travelers can also explore UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa, and Swayambhunath to gain cultural context before heading into the Himalayas.

Scenic Flight to Lukla and Entry into the Khumbu

The trek starts with a scenic mountain flight to Lukla, either directly from Kathmandu or via Ramechhap during peak seasons. From Lukla, the trail follows the Dudh Koshi River through forests, suspension bridges, and traditional Sherpa villages. These early trekking days are gentle and help the body adjust gradually to altitude.

Namche Bazaar and Acclimatization

Namche Bazaar, the Sherpa capital of the Khumbu, is reached after a steady climb. This vibrant mountain town is essential for acclimatization. A rest and hike day allows trekkers to gain altitude safely while enjoying panoramic views of Mount Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. Namche also offers insight into Sherpa culture, mountain trading history, and daily life in the Everest region.

High Alpine Trails and Kongma La Pass

Leaving the main Everest Base Camp trail, the route heads toward Dingboche and Chhukung. The crossing of Kongma La Pass is one of the most demanding sections of the trek, involving rocky moraines and glacial terrain. From the summit, trekkers are rewarded with dramatic Himalayan views before descending toward Lobuche.

Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar

From Lobuche, the trail follows the Khumbu Glacier to Gorak Shep and onward to Everest Base Camp (5,364m). Standing at the base of the world’s highest mountain is a powerful and emotional experience. The following morning, an early ascent of Kala Patthar (5,545m) offers the best close up views of Mount Everest, Nuptse, and the Khumbu Icefall.

Cho La Pass and Gokyo Valley

After visiting Everest Base Camp, the route turns toward Dzongla and crosses Cho La Pass, which often involves snow and ice. This crossing connects the Everest Base Camp trail with the stunning Gokyo Valley, home to a series of turquoise glacial lakes. A rest day includes the hike to Gokyo Ri, one of the finest panoramic viewpoints in the Everest region.

Renjo La Pass and Thame Valley

The final high crossing, Renjo La Pass, is considered the most scenic of the three passes. From the summit, trekkers enjoy sweeping views across the Gokyo Lakes and surrounding Himalayan peaks. The descent into the Thame Valley reveals quieter trails, traditional Sherpa villages, and historic trade routes near the Tibetan border.

Return to Lukla and Kathmandu

The trek gradually returns through Namche Bazaar, Phakding, and Lukla. A final evening in Lukla marks the completion of this incredible circuit. Flights return to Kathmandu, followed by a free day for rest, sightseeing, or shopping before final departure.
