Everest Three High Passes Trek Overview

The Everest Three High Passes Trek is a thrilling and immersive journey through Nepal’s legendary Khumbu region, crafted for experienced trekkers who seek both high-altitude adventure and deep cultural connection. Spanning approximately 20 days Itinerary, this challenging circuit leads you through the most remote and stunning parts of the Everest region, crossing three major Himalayan passes-Kongma La (5,535m), Cho La (5,420m), and Renjo La (5,340m). It also includes the iconic Everest Base Camp (5,364m) and the spectacular Kala Patthar (5,545m) viewpoint, offering the most intimate and panoramic view of Mount Everest (8,848.86m).

Your journey begins in Kathmandu, where you can explore vibrant UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Pashupatinath Temple, Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple), Boudhanath Stupa, and the historic squares of Patan and Bhaktapur. These sacred and architectural wonders provide a powerful cultural introduction before heading to the mountains. Trekkers typically spend a day or two in Kathmandu to prepare for the trek, meet their guides, check equipment, and rest before departure.

The trek officially starts with a scenic flight to Lukla (2,860m) from Kathmandu or, during the peak trekking seasons of spring (March to May) and autumn (late September to early December), via a 6-hour early morning drive to Ramechhap Airport, followed by a short but breathtaking flight. From Lukla, the trail ascends through lush rhododendron and pine forests, crossing numerous suspension bridges and passing through vibrant Sherpa villages until reaching Namche Bazaar (3,440m) the bustling heart of the Khumbu. Here, trekkers acclimatize while enjoying views of Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam.

The trail is generally well-maintained but can be rugged and steep in parts, especially near the high passes. Kongma La and Cho La passes often have snow and ice, requiring careful navigation, sometimes with the assistance of guides and trekking poles. The route also passes near glaciers, including the Ngozumpa Glacier, the longest glacier in the Himalayas, visible from the Gokyo Valley, providing dramatic icy landscapes and an opportunity to witness ongoing glacial dynamics.

Wildlife enthusiasts may spot Himalayan tahr, musk deer, and various bird species such as the Himalayan monal pheasant and snowcock in the lower forests and alpine zones. The transition from dense forests to alpine meadows highlights the region’s biodiversity.

Continuing the trek, you will visit Tengboche Monastery (3,860m), a serene spiritual sanctuary with commanding mountain backdrops. The route then traverses the high passes, each offering breathtaking panoramas of the surrounding peaks. The Gokyo Valley, famed for its turquoise glacial lakes, and the challenging Cho La Pass, which connects Gokyo with the Everest Base Camp trail, offer unforgettable highlights. The trek also reaches the Thame Valley, near the Tibet border, once a historic trade route for yak caravans transporting salt and wool.

Throughout the trek, you’ll stay in cozy local teahouses, where warm Sherpa hospitality, traditional meals, and the simplicity of mountain life provide rich cultural immersion. Along the way, you’ll gain insights into Sherpa traditions, Buddhist spirituality, and the region’s deep-rooted connection to the Himalayas. Encounters with ancient chortens, fluttering prayer flags, and high-altitude farming communities enrich the experience.

With well-planned acclimatization days, experienced guides, and backup safety plans, this trek ensures both adventure and well-being at high elevations. It's a more scenic, diverse, and rewarding alternative to the standard Everest Base Camp Trek-perfect for trekkers seeking solitude, challenge, and exploration in the highlands of Nepal.

Similar Treks: For those interested in exploring other challenging routes in the Everest region, the Gokyo Lakes and Gokyo Ri Trek is a popular option, offering stunning views of turquoise lakes and the Himalayan panorama without the high passes. The Everest Base Camp Trek is ideal for first-time visitors or those with limited time, focusing on the classic route to the base of Everest. The Three Passes Trek combined with Island Peak Climbing offers mountaineering alongside trekking, for those seeking a summit challenge. Additionally, the Manaslu Circuit Trek and Annapurna Circuit Trek provide diverse cultural and natural experiences in neighboring regions with equally breathtaking landscapes and fewer crowds.

The Everest Three High Passes Trek is not just a trail-it’s a journey through Himalayan history, landscapes, and spirit. It offers a complete experience of the Everest region’s geographic, spiritual, and cultural grandeur, and is truly a once-in-a-lifetime adventure for those ready to explore beyond the ordinary.

The trek from Dingboche to Chhukung is a scenic and gradual ascent that takes about 3 hours, covering a distance of approximately 5–6 km (3–4 miles). The trek from Chhukung to Lobuche over Kongma La Pass is a challenging and scenic journey. It takes about 8 hours, covering 12-13 km, with steep climbs, glacier crossings, and no teahouses along the way.

Start early (around 5–6 AM) to avoid afternoon weather changes. The trail is rocky and steep, with sections of loose scree and ice. After summiting Kongma La Pass (5,535m / 18,159 ft), you’re rewarded with panoramic views of Lhotse, Makalu, Ama Dablam, and the Khumbu Glacier.

The descent crosses the Khumbu Glacier, eventually reaching Lobuche (4,910m / 16,109 ft), a small village with a rich history in mountaineering. Lobuche has long been a stop for climbers attempting Mount Everest and surrounding peaks, and it’s known for its memorials to fallen mountaineers along the Everest Base Camp trail.

Tips for a Safe & Successful Trek

  • Go slowly, pace yourself.

  • Carry enough water, snacks, or a packed lunch.

  • Wear warm layers and bring gear for changing weather (gloves, windproof jacket, headlamp).

  • Talk to your guide - if weather is bad or you’re feeling fatigued, consider taking the safer route via Dingboche to Lobuche.

This trek is tough but rewarding, offering some of the best views in the Khumbu and a chance to reflect at the memorials in Lobuche.

Today is the most exciting part of the trek as you finally reach Everest Base Camp. The trail from Lobuche to Gorak Shep is gradual but challenging, crossing rocky and glacial terrain. After a short break at Gorak Shep, continue to Base Camp, walking slowly through the Khumbu Glacier area.

  • Walking Distance: ~13-15 km round trip

  • Walking Time: 8-9 hours

  • Altitude Gain: ~450m

Everest Base Camp has served as the staging point for Everest expeditions since the 1950s. Spend 30–40 minutes exploring, taking photos, and enjoying the incredible views of the Khumbu Icefall.

Afterward, return to Gorak Shep for the night. Teahouses here are very basic, with cold roomsshared toilets, and no tap water-buy bottled water, and carry your own snacks and essentials, as food is limited due to the altitude. This is a true bucket-list achievement-a moment to remember.

Quick Overview:

Yes, you can buy trekking gear in Nepal. In fact, Nepal is a popular destination for trekkers and climbers, and there are many shops in Kathmandu and other cities that sell trekking gear, including clothing, boots, backpacks, sleeping bags, and other accessories. You can find both international and local brands, and the prices are generally much cheaper than in Western countries.

However, it's important to note that the quality of gear can vary, and some items may not be genuine or may be of lower quality than advertised. It's a good idea to do your research and ask for recommendations from other trekkers or your tour operator. Additionally, if you're on a tight schedule, it's best to bring your own gear to ensure that you have everything you need and that it fits properly.

Will someone come to pick me up at the airport?

If you have booked a trekking package with a trekking company or a travel agency, then they will usually arrange for someone to pick you up at the airport. You should confirm this with your travel provider before your departure.

If you are traveling independently and have not arranged for an airport pickup, you can easily find taxis or private cars at the airport to take you to your accommodation. However, it is important to only use licensed taxis or cars from authorized providers to ensure your safety.

How Fit Do I Need to Be?

Trekking in Nepal can be physically challenging, and you will need to be in good physical condition to complete the trek comfortably. The altitude and terrain can make it difficult to breathe, and you will need to have a good level of fitness to tackle the trekking routes.

It is recommended that you start preparing for the trek at least a few months before your trip. Regular exercise, such as hiking, running, or cycling, can help you build endurance and strengthen your muscles. It is also important to consult with your doctor to ensure that you are physically fit to undertake the trek.

During the trek, it is important to take your time and pace yourself, especially as you ascend to higher altitudes. Acclimatization days are built into the itinerary to help you adjust to the altitude and avoid altitude sickness.

Do we need to carry our own medicines?

Yes, it is recommended to carry your own medicines and a basic first aid kit while trekking in Nepal. It's always better to be prepared for any unforeseen medical emergencies, such as altitude sickness, cold, flu, headaches, and diarrhea. You can consult with your doctor before the trek and ask them to recommend essential medicines to carry with you. Additionally, it is advisable to carry any personal prescription medications you may require. However, you can also find pharmacies in some of the major towns along the trekking route, but it is not guaranteed that they will stock your specific medication.

Can we pay by Credit card and Cash for this trip?

It depends on the policies of the tour company or trekking agency you choose. Some companies may accept credit card payments, while others may only accept cash payments. It's best to check with the company beforehand to confirm their payment methods and policies. Additionally, it's always a good idea to carry some cash with you on the trek for emergencies and incidentals.

Access to clean water can be a concern while trekking in the Everest region. It is important to stay hydrated to avoid altitude sickness, but it is equally important to be responsible and minimize the environmental impact. Here are some water options and responsible tourism tips for the Everest region:

Bring a reusable water bottle: It is important to carry a reusable water bottle on the trek. Most teahouses and lodges offer filtered or boiled water that you can refill your water bottle with. This helps reduce plastic waste and is a more sustainable option.

Use water purification tablets: If you are unsure about the cleanliness of the water, you can use water purification tablets or a water filter to ensure that the water is safe for drinking. It is advisable to carry these with you.

Avoid bottled water: Bottled water is not readily available in the Everest region, and it can be expensive to transport. Additionally, the plastic waste generated by bottled water is harmful to the environment.

Support local businesses: Buying water from local teahouses and lodges helps support the local economy.

Avoid using soaps in natural water sources: It is important to be responsible and not use soaps or other cleaning agents in natural water sources like rivers and streams. This can harm the environment and the wildlife that depend on these water sources.

Carry out your trash: It is important to carry out your trash and dispose of it properly in designated waste bins. Littering can harm the environment and the wildlife in the region.

By following these responsible tourism tips, you can enjoy your trek in the Everest region while minimizing your environmental impact.

Accommodation on the Everest Region Trek can vary from basic teahouses or lodges to more comfortable guesthouses. The accommodations generally have shared bathrooms and the rooms are typically small and basic, with a bed, a few hooks to hang your clothes, and a small table.

In some of the more popular villages along the trek, such as Namche Bazaar, there are also more upscale accommodations with attached bathrooms, hot showers, and other amenities. However, these options tend to be more expensive.

It's important to note that during peak trekking seasons, the accommodations can become crowded, and it's advisable to book in advance. Also, it's recommended to bring your own sleeping bag as the bedding provided at the teahouses may not be enough to keep you warm in the colder months.

Overall, the accommodations on the Everest Region Trek are basic, but they offer a comfortable and convenient place to rest after a long day of trekking. Additionally, it's important to practice responsible tourism by respecting the local customs, not wasting resources such as water, and leaving the accommodations clean and tidy.

Managing your passport and visa is an important part of preparing for your trip to Nepal. Here are some important things to keep in mind:

Passport: Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your expected departure date from Nepal. Make sure to bring your passport with you on your trip, and keep it in a safe place.

Visa: Most visitors to Nepal require a visa. You can obtain a tourist visa upon arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, or at any land border crossing. The cost of the visa varies depending on the length of your stay, but is generally around $30-$50 for a 30-day visa. You can also apply for a visa in advance at a Nepalese embassy or consulate in your home country.

Visa application requirements: To apply for a visa, you will need a valid passport, a passport-sized photo, and a completed visa application form. You may also need to provide evidence of your travel itinerary and proof of sufficient funds for your stay in Nepal.

Visa extension: If you wish to stay in Nepal longer than the duration of your initial visa, you can apply for a visa extension at the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu. You must apply before your current visa expires. The cost of a visa extension is $2 per day for up to 15 days, and $5 per day thereafter.

Travel documents: It is a good idea to make copies of your passport and visa, and keep them in a separate place from your actual travel documents. You can also email yourself a copy of these documents, in case you lose your physical copies while traveling.

Safety: It is important to take precautions to keep your passport and visa safe while traveling in Nepal. Keep them in a secure place, such as a money belt or hotel safe. Be aware of pickpockets and other scams that target tourists.

Other documents: Depending on your travel plans, you may also need other documents such as travel insurance, flight tickets, and trekking permits. Make sure to research the specific requirements for your trip, and carry all necessary documents with you.
