Experience the Untouched Beauty of the Khopra Danda Trek - Nepal’s Hidden Himalayan Trail
Your adventure begins with a warm welcome upon arrival in Kathmandu, the vibrant capital of Nepal. After a short exploration of the city, you will travel to Pokhara, a scenic lakeside destination famous among travelers for its laid-back vibe, cozy cafes, and stunning views of Phewa Lake and the Annapurna range. A night in Lakeside Pokhara offers the perfect place to relax and prepare before heading into the mountains.
The Khopra Danda Trek is a peaceful, off the beaten path journey in the Annapurna region, ideal for trekkers looking to escape the busy trails of Annapurna Base Camp or Mardi Himal. This 10 to 11 day trek starts from Nayapul and leads through rhododendron forests, terraced hillsides, and traditional Gurung and Magar villages. Early in the trek, you will follow the popular Ghorepani Poon Hill trail, where a sunrise from Poon Hill (3,210 m) provides breathtaking views of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhre, and more.
After Ghorepani, the trail heads into quieter, less explored areas, gradually ascending to Khopra Ridge (3,660 m). From here, you can enjoy 360 degree panoramic views of Annapurna South, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Hiunchuli, and the sacred Machhapuchhre. A key highlight is the optional hike to Khayar Lake (4,500 m), a revered alpine lake set among snow covered peaks that offers peace, solitude, and spiritual significance.
Along the way, you will stay in community lodges, experience authentic Himalayan culture, and explore the biodiversity of the Annapurna Conservation Area, home to blooming rhododendrons, Himalayan monals, and more. The trek is moderately challenging, with 5 to 8 hours of walking daily on mixed terrain, making it ideal for those with good fitness and a sense of adventure.
The best times to do this trek are spring (February to May) and autumn (September to December), when the skies are clear, temperatures are pleasant, and mountain views are at their best.
After the trek, return to Pokhara’s Lakeside to relax and enjoy your accomplishment, then head back to Kathmandu for a final cultural evening before departure.
Yes, Sole Encounters Adventures proudly offers this unforgettable journey, combining natural beauty, local culture, and professional guidance to give you a unique and enriching trekking experience in one of Nepal’s best kept secrets.

Ghandruk (1,940 m / 6,364 ft) is one of the most iconic Gurung villages in the Annapurna region, once known as a key recruitment center for the British Gurkhas. Today, it offers a unique blend of culture, natural beauty, and warm hospitality. While in Ghandruk, you can visit the Gurung Cultural Museum, explore traditional stone-paved lanes, and enjoy spectacular sunset and sunrise views of the surrounding peaks. You’ll also have the opportunity to experience authentic Gurung lifestyle, try local homemade meals and herbal teas, and interact with friendly villagers. The day ends with an overnight stay in a cozy teahouse, surrounded by panoramic Himalayan views.
Today’s trek takes you off the main trail into the quiet alpine zone. After breakfast, begin a 7-hour walk covering around 12–13 km from Ghandruk to Bayeli. The trail features a mix of ascents, descents, and flat sections, passing through dense rhododendron and oak forests with occasional views of Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre, and Dhaulagiri.
Lunch will be served at a teahouse along the way. Bayeli, once used as a summer grazing area by local herders, is now a peaceful overnight stop for trekkers, offering a remote high-altitude setting with stunning mountain views. Overnight in a teahouse surrounded by Himalayan wilderness.

Note that teahouse facilities at Khopra are limited, and you may need to share a dormitory room due to basic lodging. Overnight at Khopra Ridge, surrounded by vast mountain views.
Today’s trek descends from Khopra Danda to Swanta, a scenic journey of 6 to 7 hours covering 10–11 km. The trail passes through alpine pastures, forests, and terraced fields, with stunning views of Dhaulagiri and the valley below.
If you wish to hike to Khayar Lake (4,500 m), it's an optional full-day side trip. Afterward, continue the descent to Swanta, a quiet village rich in local culture. Overnight in a teahouse, surrounded by rural beauty and friendly locals.
Today’s 7-hour trek covers around 9–10 km, with a mix of uphill climbs, downhill sections, and some flat stretches. The trail crosses a suspension bridge, passes through forests, villages, and terraced fields, and offers great views of Dhaulagiri along the way.

From Birethanti, enjoy a 1.5 to 2-hour drive back to Pokhara (822 m / 2,697 ft). Upon arrival, relax in the Lakeside area, stroll along Phewa Lake, enjoy a delicious dinner, and soak in the peaceful vibe of Pokhara. Overnight at a hotel, resting after your amazing Himalayan journey.

The Khopra Danda Trek is a lesser-known but incredibly rewarding trek in the Annapurna region of Nepal. It offers a peaceful, off the beaten path experience, making it ideal for those who want to avoid the crowds of more popular routes like Annapurna Base Camp or Ghorepani Poon Hill.
The trek typically takes 10 to 11 days to complete, depending on your pace and the route taken. The trek is suitable for trekkers who are moderately fit and have some prior hiking experience.
Best Seasons to Trek Khopra Danda
The ideal times to trek are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to December) with clear skies, mild weather, and great mountain views. Winter (January to February) is colder but possible with proper gear, while monsoon (June to August) brings heavy rain and slippery trails.
The Khopra Danda Trek is moderately challenging, suitable for trekkers with decent fitness and some hiking experience. The trail includes steep ascents, rocky paths, and varied terrain, with daily walks of 5 to 7 hours.
The highest point is Khopra Ridge at 3,660 meters (12,008 feet), offering stunning views of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna South, and Machhapuchhre. An optional hike to Khayar Lake (4,500 meters / 14,763 feet) is available for fit trekkers; it’s a long, tough day hike on rugged trails. Always consult your guide before attempting it.
Trail conditions range from stone steps and forest paths in lower areas to alpine ridges and exposed trails at higher altitudes. In wet or snowy seasons, trails can be slippery.
Accommodation is in basic teahouses. Lower villages have simple rooms with shared bathrooms, while higher stops like Bayeli and Khopra Danda may offer dorm-style rooms with limited facilities. A sleeping bag is recommended for colder nights.
For the Khopra Danda Trek, you need two permits:
Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)
Trekker’s Information Management System (TIMS) card
No worries-we arrange both permits for you.
Along the route, you will stay in local teahouses, which offer basic but comfortable lodging with shared facilities. All meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) are provided at these teahouses, serving traditional Nepali dishes like dal bhat, Tibetan bread, noodles, and soups. If you have special dietary needs, just let us know in advance.
While it is technically possible to trek solo, it’s not recommended due to remote trails, limited signage, and safety concerns. Trekking with a licensed guide and porter makes the journey much safer, more informative, and enjoyable. They assist with navigation, local insight, and logistics.
At Sole Encounters Adventures, we provide trusted guides and porters for a secure and well-supported experience. If you still wish to go solo, it's at your own risk, and we cannot guarantee support without our team.

Trekking to Khopra Danda was an unforgettable experience. Our guide and porter were highly experienced and took care of everything from the moment we arrived in Nepal, allowing us to fully enjoy the journey. Though challenging, the breathtaking views made it all worthwhile. Choosing the less-traveled Khopra route gave us a unique, crowd-free adventure through stunning Himalayan landscapes and rich cultural encounters. We gained insights into local traditions, trekking life, and the resilience of Nepali farmers. Nepal’s beauty and warmth left a lasting impression—it was an enriching experience in every way.

BoliviaA memorable trekking experience
2nd May, 2024
In March 2014, our group of nine, including my 61-year-old mother, trekked up Langtang Valley with the outstanding guidance of Prem Tamang. He went above and beyond to care for everyone, especially the less experienced trekkers, making the journey safe and enjoyable for all-my mother in particular. We later explored the stunning Khopra Danda, a trek we absolutely loved for its breathtaking scenery. I wouldn’t hesitate to book another trek with Prem and highly recommend him for anyone seeking a memorable adventure in Nepal.
