Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek

Key Information

Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek Overview

Welcome to one of the most spectacular trekking adventures in Nepal. The Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek takes place in the Annapurna region of north-central Nepal, one of the most famous mountain areas in the Himalayas. This region lies within the Annapurna Conservation Area and is surrounded by some of the world’s highest peaks, including Annapurna I (8,091m), Dhaulagiri (8,167m), and Manaslu (8,163m).This trek offers a complete Himalayan experience, combining dramatic high mountain scenery, diverse landscapes, cultural encounters, and the challenge of crossing one of the highest trekking passes in the world. The addition of Tilicho Lake, one of the highest alpine lakes on Earth, makes this version of the Annapurna Circuit even more rewarding and memorable.

Drive from Kathmandu to Jagat - Gateway to the Annapurna Region

The journey begins in Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal. From here, you travel to the Annapurna region by road. A scenic drive takes you from Kathmandu to Besisahar, followed by an adventurous local jeep ride to the mountain village of Jagat, the starting point of the trek.

➡️Kathmandu to Besisahar: approximately 175 km, about 6-7 hours by private vehicle

➡️Besisahar to Jagat: approximately 40 km, about 2-3 hours by local shared jeep

This full day of travel passes through river valleys, terraced farmland, and traditional hillside villages, offering a wonderful introduction to rural Nepal.

Trekking Through the Annapurna Mountain Region

From Jagat, the trail follows the Marsyangdi River through lush forests, waterfalls, suspension bridges, and traditional villages such as Dharapani, Chame, and Pisang. As you gain altitude, the scenery gradually changes from green hills and pine forests to alpine terrain and high mountain desert landscapes.

On average, trekkers walk 5/6 hours per day, allowing enough time to enjoy the scenery and adjust to the altitude. This steady pace makes the trek suitable for most reasonably fit travelers.

Acclimatization Day in Manang

At 3,540 meters, Manang is an important acclimatization stop in the Annapurna region. An extra day is spent here to help your body adjust before heading higher toward Tilicho Lake and Thorong La Pass.

During this day, trekkers can take short hikes to nearby viewpoints, monasteries, or glacial lakes. These hikes help with acclimatization while offering stunning views of Annapurna II, Gangapurna, and surrounding peaks.

Tilicho Lake - A High-Altitude Himalayan Highlight

Tilicho Lake, at 4,919 meters, is one of the most breathtaking destinations in the Annapurna mountain region. Surrounded by towering snow-covered cliffs, the lake offers a dramatic and peaceful alpine setting.

Including Tilicho Lake in the circuit creates a more complete high-altitude experience. The route to the lake passes through remote terrain with fewer crowds, giving trekkers a stronger sense of wilderness and adventure. For many, reaching the lake becomes the emotional highlight of the entire trek.

Crossing Thorong La and Reaching Muktinath

The crossing of Thorong La Pass at 5,416 meters is the highest and most challenging part of the trek. An early morning ascent rewards trekkers with breathtaking views across the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges.

After the pass, the trail descends to the sacred temple of Muktinath at 3,760 meters, an important pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists. The journey then continues through the dry and windswept landscapes of the Mustang region before reaching Jomsom.

Safety, Acclimatization, and Experienced Crew

This is a high-altitude trek in the Annapurna region that requires careful planning, proper acclimatization, and professional support. Safety and comfort are always the top priorities.

➡️Experienced English-speaking guides trained in high-altitude safety and first aid

➡️Strong and reliable porters to carry your main luggage

➡️Proper acclimatization day in Manang

➡️Carefully selected teahouse accommodations

➡️All permits, transport, and logistics arranged in advance

➡️Emergency support and evacuation coordination if required

Our crews are from Himalayan communities and have years of experience guiding trekkers across the Annapurna region. Their local knowledge and friendly approach make the journey safer and more enjoyable.

Best Time for the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek

The best seasons for this trek are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to December). During these months, the weather is generally stable, the skies are clear, and mountain views are at their best.

Spring (March to May):

➡️Pleasant temperatures at lower and mid-altitudes

➡️Rhododendron forests in bloom

➡️Clear mornings and excellent mountain views

Autumn (September to November):

➡️Stable weather after the monsoon season

➡️Crisp air and excellent visibility

➡️Ideal conditions for crossing Thorong La Pass and visiting Tilicho Lake

Winter (December to February) is colder with snow at high elevations, especially around Thorong La and Tilicho Lake. Monsoon season (June to August) brings rain, landslides, and limited mountain views, making trekking less comfortable.

Relax in Pokhara After the Trek

After completing the trek, you travel to Pokhara at 820 meters, a beautiful lakeside city in central Nepal. Pokhara is the main gateway to the Annapurna region and the perfect place to relax after the trek. With peaceful lake views, cafés, and mountain scenery, it provides a comfortable and memorable ending to your adventure.

The Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek offers everything a Himalayan trekker could hope for: dramatic scenery, cultural richness, high mountain passes, and the unforgettable beauty of Tilicho Lake in the heart of the Annapurna region.

Truly Amazing Trek with a Professional Local Team

20th November, 2025

Sole Encounters Adventures is one of the most supportive and reliable local trekking companies we have ever traveled with, and we highly recommend them to anyone visiting Nepal. From the warm airport welcome to flexible itinerary adjustments, the entire team was helpful at every stage.

Our guide, Raj Rai, was outstanding. His English was excellent, and he shared detailed knowledge about the trekking region, Nepal’s history, climate, politics, and culture. He kept the journey enjoyable with humor while carefully monitoring our pace and comfort. We noticed other trekkers did not receive the same level of attention from their guides.

Our porters, Narendra and Pasang Tamang, were exceptional, always smiling, strong, and incredibly supportive. Thank you to the entire Sole Encounters team for such a memorable Himalayan adventure. We are already planning our return to Nepal and will definitely choose Sole Encounters Adventures again. Namaste.
