The Everest Base Camp Trek (EBC) takes you through Nepal’s Khumbu region-an area rich in Sherpa culture, stunning landscapes, and some of the highest peaks on Earth, including Mount Everest (Sagarmatha/Chomolungma/Deodungha, 8,848.86m). Nestled within the Mahalangur Himal range along the Nepal-Tibet border, Everest rises above glaciers and valleys, creating a breathtaking geographical setting.
Your journey starts in Kathmandu, where you can explore UNESCO World Heritage Sites like Pashupatinath Temple and Boudhanath Stupa, gaining insight into Nepal’s vibrant Hindu and Buddhist culture. A thrilling flight to Lukla, the historic gateway to Everest, launches your trek amidst spectacular mountain views and Sherpa villages.
The trek follows ancient trade and pilgrimage routes within Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its dramatic scenery, rhododendron and juniper forests, alpine meadows, and diverse wildlife such as Himalayan tahrs, musk deer, danphe pheasants, and even elusive snow leopards. You’ll pass through vibrant Sherpa hubs like Namche Bazaar-the cultural and economic heart of the Khumbu-famous for its lively markets and festivals, offering a deep cultural experience.
Majestic Himalayan giants-Everest, Lhotse (8,516m), Nuptse (7,861m), Ama Dablam (6,812m), and Pumori (7,161m) accompany you throughout the trek. The highlight is reaching EBC (5,364m), where you witness the mighty Khumbu Glacier and icefall. Annually, around 600 to 800 climbers summit Everest, mainly during the pre-monsoon (April-May) and post-monsoon (September-November) seasons, which also mark the best trekking periods for clear skies and moderate weather.
A sunrise climb to Kala Patthar (5,545m) offers the most iconic panoramic views of Everest’s south face. This sacred spot, whose name means “Black Rock,” is a traditional place of reverence for Sherpas and a highlight of the trek.
Typically completed in 15 days with one acclimatization day, the trek involves daily hikes of 10-15 kilometers lasting 5-7 hours. Nights are spent in welcoming teahouses, supporting the local Sherpa economy and preserving their rich cultural heritage.
The Khumbu region gained worldwide fame after the historic 1953 Everest summit by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, whose legacy continues to inspire adventurers today. The trek concludes with a return to Lukla and a scenic flight back to Kathmandu, offering one last glimpse of the magnificent Himalayas.

Your Everest Base Camp adventure begins with your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. Upon landing, our representative will warmly welcome you and transfer you to your hotel. You’ll have the rest of the day to relax and explore the vibrant Thamel area. In the evening, enjoy a welcome dinner where you’ll also receive a detailed trek briefing. During this meeting, we’ll assist you in gathering any last-minute items needed for the journey ahead. Please note: if your flight to Lukla departs from Ramechhap, be prepared for an early morning 6-hour drive the next day to reach the airport on time.
Today Your Everest Base Camp adventure begins with a 35-minute flight from Kathmandu to Lukla (or 20 minutes from Ramechhap, with a 6-hour drive from Kathmandu). Upon arriving in Lukla, you’ll meet your trekking crew and start your trek to Phakding, which takes about 3-4 hours, covering 8-9 km. The trail has uphill and downhill sections and crosses several suspension bridges over the Dudh Koshi River.
If your flight is cancelled due to bad weather, you’ll have the opportunity to fly the next day. Be sure to get an early start, as flights to Lukla are typically prioritized first thing in the morning.
Stay in touch with your guide or organizer for updates, and enjoy your trek
Today’s journey takes you through pine forests, over high suspension bridges, and into Sagarmatha National Park. The trail is mostly uphill with rocky sections and some gradual descents, covering around 11-12 km in about 7 hours. A highlight of the day is crossing the famous Hillary Suspension Bridge before tackling the final steep climb, where you’ll catch your first view of Mount Everest.
Namche Bazaar (3,440m) is a vibrant Sherpa town and a key acclimatization stop. Once a traditional trading post for Tibetan goods, it is now the cultural and commercial hub of the Khumbu region. You’ll spend two nights here to rest and adjust to the altitude.
Today is an acclimatization day, where we take a short hike to the Everest Viewpoint at an elevation of 3,880m to help your body adjust to the altitude. The hike will take about 3-4 hours round-trip, covering a distance of 5-6 km. From the viewpoint, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of Mount Everest, Ama Dablam, Lhotse, and other stunning peaks in the region.
Acclimatization is crucial to prevent altitude sickness as we gain higher elevations. It allows your body to gradually adjust to the reduced oxygen levels, ensuring a safer and more comfortable trek. After soaking in the views, we’ll descend back to Namche Bazaar to rest and allow your body to acclimatize further. The altitude gain for this hike is around 400 meters.
During your free time in Namche, you can enjoy activities like visiting the Sherpa Museum, learning about the region's culture, or exploring the local markets. There’s also an opportunity for last-minute shopping, where you can buy gear or souvenirs. This is a perfect time to relax and prepare for the next part of your trek.
Today Leaving Namche Bazaar, the trail follows scenic ridges with stunning Himalayan views before descending to Phunki Tenga, where you’ll stop for lunch at a local teahouse. From there, a steep uphill climb leads to Tengboche (3,860m), with a total walking time of 6-7 hours and an altitude gain of around 500m.
The highlight here is the Tengboche Monastery, the largest in the region, originally built in 1916 and rebuilt in 1989 after a fire. A key spiritual center for the Sherpa community, it hosts annual festivals like Mani Rimdu in October or November. The monastery offers panoramic views of Everest, Ama Dablam, and Lhotse, and is open daily from 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM with an entry fee of 300–400 NPR. The trail features a mix of uphill, downhill, and flat sections, making this day both culturally rich and scenically rewarding.
Today’s trail includes a mix of uphill, downhill, and flat sections, so it's important to walk at a steady pace as you gain altitude. Enjoy a morning tea break in Debuche and stop for lunch in Pangboche, the last permanent village on the route. The trek covers around 10-11 km in 6-7 hours, with an altitude gain of about 550m.
Dingboche (4,410m) is a peaceful village surrounded by stone-walled fields and stunning mountain views. Known for high-altitude farming, it serves as an important acclimatization stop, especially for those heading to Island Peak or Everest Base Camp. You’ll spend two nights here, with a short hike planned the next day to aid acclimatization and recovery.
Today, take a short hike to Nagarjun Hill (5,100m) or Chhukung Valley (4,730m) for stunning views of Makalu, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. The hike takes 3-4 hours, with an altitude gain of 300-700m depending on the route.
If you feel the need for extra rest, talk to your guide-you can do a shorter walk of a few hundred meters and return early for more recovery. It’s important to go slowly and listen to your body.
Why It’s Important: This “climb high, sleep low” method helps your body adjust gradually to the altitude, reducing the risk of altitude sickness and ensuring a safer journey ahead.
Today’s trail climbs gradually through alpine terrain, offering views of Taboche and Cholatse. After crossing a glacial stream, stop at Thukla for a break or lunch. A steep ascent then takes you to the Trekkers’ Memorial at Thukla Pass (4,830m), honoring climbers who lost their lives on Everest.
From there, continue over rocky and exposed paths as the air thins and it gets colder. After 5-6 hours of trekking and an altitude gain of around 500m, you’ll reach Lobuche, a small, wind-swept settlement near the Khumbu Glacier. Rest here and prepare for tomorrow’s exciting trek to Everest Base Camp.
Today is the highlight of the trek as you reach Everest Base Camp (5,364m). The trail from Lobuche to Gorak Shep is gradual but tough, crossing rocky and glacial terrain. After a short break, continue slowly through the Khumbu Glacier area to Base Camp. The round trip covers 13-15 km and takes about 8-9 hours, with an altitude gain of around 450m.
At Everest Base Camp, spend 30-40 minutes taking photos and soaking in the views of the Khumbu Icefall. Afterward, return to Gorak Shep for the night. Teahouses here are very basic, with cold rooms, shared toilets, and limited food. Bring snacks and buy bottled water.
Go slowly, even if it’s a long day-your Sherpa team will support you. Reaching Base Camp is a true bucket-list moment you’ll never forget.
Today starts early with an optional sunrise hike to Kala Patthar (5,545m), offering the best panoramic views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, and the Khumbu Glacier. This iconic viewpoint takes about 3 hours round trip and gives you a close look at Everest without technical climbing.
After soaking in the views, return to Gorak Shep for breakfast, then begin your descent past Lobuche and Thukla, reaching Pheriche or Somare (4,240m) in about 4-5 hours. The total journey takes 7-8 hours, covering 12–15 km, with an altitude drop of around 1,300m.
If heading to Kala Patthar, bring warm gear, water, and snacks, as mornings are cold and windy. Descending to a lower altitude tonight will help your body recover and adjust comfortably.
The trek from Pheriche to Namche Bazaar takes around 7 hours, with a combination of uphill, downhill, and flat sections. The trail covers a distance of about 13-15 km and involves a climb of 600–700 meters in altitude.
Along the way, you’ll pass through charming villages and temples, offering a glimpse of local life and culture. The trail offers spectacular views of the Himalayas, including Ama Dablam and Lhotse, and crosses rivers and suspension bridges.
After reaching Namche Bazaar, enjoy a refreshing hot shower, relax with drinks, and explore the shops and bars. It's a great place to unwind after the long trek and prepare for the next leg of the journey.
The trek from Namche Bazaar to Lukla takes around 7-8 hours, covering a distance of approximately 19–22km. The trail includes a mix of uphill, downhill, and flat sections, with varied terrain that passes through villages and crosses suspension bridges. Along the way, you will encounter beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
While trekking, you may be disrupted by donkeys and mules carrying goods along the narrow paths, so it’s essential to walk safely and give them space to pass. Be mindful of your surroundings to avoid accidents.
You will stop for lunch on the way, usually at a teahouse along the trail, before continuing on to Lukla. After reaching Lukla, enjoy a celebratory dinner and drinks with your trekking crew. If you wish, you can share tips and thank them for their hard work. Your guide will also inform you about your flight time back to Kathmandu the following day.
After your trek, you will take a flight from Lukla to Ramechhap, offering scenic views of the Himalayas. From Ramechhap, you'll drive back to Kathmandu, which takes about 5-6 hours. Upon arrival, you can freshen up, change into clean clothes, and then explore Thamel, the bustling tourist hub of Kathmandu.
Please note, flights to Lukla from Kathmandu are typically available until September 25th. After this date, flights will be diverted to Ramechhap due to congestion at Kathmandu’s airport, especially during the spring season (March 15th onward).
You’ll also receive a certificate of achievement for completing the trek. Enjoy your time in Kathmandu before your final departure!
Today is a free day to enjoy Kathmandu at your own pace. You may visit iconic sites such as Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa, or Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple). Or simply rest, relax, and enjoy shopping in Thamel for souvenirs, local crafts, and delicious food.
If you'd like to join any optional tours or activities, feel free to contact us—we can arrange a guide and transport at an additional cost.
Please also let us know your international flight details so we can arrange your airport transfer. If you're planning to stay extra days in Kathmandu, we’re happy to assist with accommodation or activities.
We're always here to help-thank you for trekking with us!
As your journey comes to an end, we will transfer you to the airport for your onward flight. It's time to say goodbye, but we hope this won’t be the last time our paths cross. We thank you for choosing us to be part of your unforgettable adventure, and we look forward to welcoming you back for more incredible experiences in the future.
Safe travels and see you again soon!
A: The best time to trek to Mount Everest Base Camp is during the pre-monsoon (spring) season from late February to May and the post-monsoon (autumn) season from late September to December. During these periods, the weather is generally clear, temperatures are moderate, and the trails are less slippery, offering stunning mountain views and comfortable trekking conditions.
The Everest Base Camp Trek is moderately challenging for beginners. While it doesn’t require technical climbing skills, trekkers need a good level of fitness and stamina to handle long days of walking, high altitudes, and changing weather. Proper acclimatization is essential to avoid altitude sickness. With good preparation, a positive mindset, and guided support, beginners can successfully complete the trek and enjoy its breathtaking scenery.
Trekkers need two main permits:
Everest Base Camp is located at an altitude of approximately 5,364 meters (17,598 feet) on the south side in Nepal. Nearby, Kala Patthar stands higher at about 5,545 meters (18,192 feet) and is famous for offering the best panoramic views of Mount Everest. Both spots require proper acclimatization due to the high altitude.
While prior trekking experience is helpful, it is not strictly necessary for the Everest Base Camp Trek. However, a good fitness level is important because the trek involves long daily walks, steep trails, and high altitude. Preparing with regular cardio exercises, strength training, and practice hikes will greatly improve your endurance and make the trek more enjoyable and safe. Guided support and proper acclimatization also help beginners complete the trek successfully.
Accommodation and Meals During the Trek
Trekkers stay in teahouses (lodges) along the route, which are basic but clean and comfortable. Rooms are typically twin-share with two separate beds and shared bathrooms. Some teahouses offer hot showers, WiFi, and charging facilities for a small extra fee.
Meals include traditional Nepali dishes like dal bhat, along with noodles, soups, and some Western options. Vegetarian meals are widely available, and prices increase with altitude. It’s a good idea to stay hydrated and carry snacks for energy between meals.
In Kathmandu, we provide accommodation in a 3 star hotel with twin-share rooms. If you prefer a private room, just let us know-we’re happy to arrange it for you at an additional cost.
On the trek, rooms are shared, and toilets are usually outside the rooms. Only Gorakshep has very basic facilities, so please be prepared.

To prevent altitude sickness during the trek, ascend gradually to allow your body to acclimatize-avoid rapid altitude gains, stay well-hydrated, eat light meals, and rest adequately. It’s also helpful to avoid alcohol and strenuous exercise in the first days at higher elevations. Some trekkers use medications like acetazolamide (Diamox) after consulting a doctor.
Common symptoms include headache, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, loss of appetite, and difficulty sleeping. If symptoms worsen-such as severe headache, vomiting, confusion, or breathlessness-descend immediately and seek medical help. Your guide is experienced in recognizing altitude sickness and will help you manage symptoms and get medical assistance if needed. Proper acclimatization and listening to your body are key to trekking safely at high altitudes
Yes! Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended. It should cover high-altitude trekking (above 5,000m), medical emergencies, helicopter evacuation, trip cancellations, natural disasters, and lost baggage. We also recommend having this coverage for your safety and peace of mind.
The cost ranges from $1,500 to $2,500 per person, depending on the package. It includes trekking permits, accommodation, meals, guide, porter, and domestic flights. It excludes personal expenses, tips, and any extra activities.
Most travelers can obtain a tourist visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu or at major land border points. You’ll need a valid passport, passport-sized photos, and the visa fee, which varies by length of stay (e.g., $30 for 15 days, $50 for 30 days, $125 for 90 days). You can also apply for a visa in advance at a Nepalese embassy.
The official currency in Nepal is the Nepalese Rupee (NPR). Cash is essential, especially in remote trekking areas, so it’s best to carry enough NPR.
Money exchange is easily done in Kathmandu, Pokhara, and major cities through authorized exchange counters offering competitive rates.
ATMs are widely available in Kathmandu, Pokhara, and larger towns, dispensing NPR and sometimes USD. However, ATMs are scarce or non-existent on trekking routes, so plan accordingly.
Besides Nepalese Rupees (NPR), the most commonly accepted foreign currencies are:
US Dollars (USD) - widely accepted, especially in tourist areas and for visa fees
Euros (EUR) - accepted in some places but less common
British Pounds (GBP) - accepted occasionally
Indian Rupees (INR) - widely accepted in Nepal but best to carry small denominations
Australian Dollars (AUD) and other major currencies may be exchanged at banks and authorized exchange counters but are less commonly accepted directly.
For everyday expenses during trekking, it’s strongly recommended to use Nepalese Rupees (NPR). Carry sufficient cash as credit/debit card use is very limited outside major cities.
When visiting Nepal, some cultural shocks might include the pace of life, crowded streets, and unique local customs that differ from your home country. You may notice different social norms, such as the importance of respecting elders, removing shoes before entering homes or temples, and the traditional greetings like “Namaste.”
Nepali people are generally very friendly, warm, and welcoming to visitors. Hospitality is a strong part of the culture, and locals often go out of their way to help tourists.
When visiting temples and religious sites, it’s important to dress modestly and respectfully. This means wearing clothes that cover your shoulders and knees, avoiding tight or revealing attire. Removing your shoes before entering temples is customary. Women may be advised to avoid visiting during their menstrual period in some traditional places, as it is considered impure in local beliefs.
Showing respect for local customs and traditions will enrich your experience and help you connect better with the people and culture of Nepal.
Weather in the Himalayas can be unpredictable. If conditions are bad:
Wait in a village or teahouse until it clears (most itineraries have buffer days).
Adjust the route or descend to lower altitudes for safety.
Use a helicopter evacuation in case of emergency or delays (available from Lukla, Pheriche, or Gorak Shep).
If flights to Lukla are canceled, you can share a helicopter or return to Kathmandu and choose another trek like Annapurna or Langtang.
Always bring travel insurance that covers flight delays, trek changes, and helicopter evacuation.
Follow your guide’s advice and stay flexible for a safe journey.
Yes, but services are basic and come with extra costs:
Hot Showers: Available in most teahouses up to Gorak Shep. They usually use gas or solar-heated water and cost around $4-$6 per shower, increasing with altitude.
Charging Electronics: Charging ports are available in dining areas or rooms in most teahouses. Expect to pay $5-$10 per hour/device. Bring a power bank and solar charger if possible.
Laundry: Limited laundry services are available in lower villages like Namche Bazaar or Lukla. Higher up, you’ll need to hand-wash small items or wait until you return.
Be prepared with extra batteries, power banks, and quick-dry clothing to manage comfortable.
Medical facilities are limited in the Everest region, especially at higher altitudes. However, basic services are available in larger villages like Namche Bazaar and Pheriche, where you’ll find aid posts and health clinics run by NGOs or volunteer doctors.
In case of emergencies, such as altitude sickness, injuries, or severe illness, your guide will arrange for immediate descent or, if needed, helicopter evacuation to Kathmandu. Helicopters can operate from places like Gorak Shep, Pheriche, and Lukla, depending on weather and visibility.
To stay protected, always trek with an experienced guide, follow altitude precautions, and carry valid travel insurance that covers high-altitude trekking and emergency helicopter evacuation. Your guide is trained in first aid and altitude sickness response, ensuring quick action if needed.
Pack light and smart. Limit your load to 14-15 kg per person. Any extra belongings can be safely stored at your hotel in Kathmandu during the trek.
Main duffel/backpack: 10-12 kg
Daypack: 2-4 kg
If your total baggage exceeds 15 kg, airlines may charge around USD 1 per extra kg. Please pack accordingly to avoid excess fees.
ATMs and money exchange services are available in Kathmandu, Lukla, and Namche Bazaar. After Namche, you will not find reliable access to cash or exchange.
Make sure to withdraw or exchange enough cash in Kathmandu or Lukla to cover the remainder of your trek. You will need it for:
Wi‑Fi, charging, hot showers, snacks, laundry
Souvenirs and tipping
Carry Nepali rupees in small denominations. You can bring USD, EUR, or GBP to Nepal and exchange them easily at licensed money changers. ATMs accept most international cards.
The best seasons for trekking are spring (February to May) and autumn (September to December). These months offer stable weather, clear skies, and breathtaking views of Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and other peaks.
A tourist visa is required to enter Nepal. Most travelers can get a visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu.
You may also fill out the online visa application in advance to save time at the airport.
🛂 Apply for Nepal Tourist Visa online

This is our 5th trip to Nepal, having trekked to Everest Base Camp, Langtang Valley, and Tibet with the outstanding guide, Prem, in 2013. Over the years, we've developed a great friendship with him. We're happy to provide excellent feedback for his expertise and wish him the best with his new business. Our next adventure takes us to Upper Dolpa, and we highly recommend Prem to fellow travelers. Trekking to Everest Base Camp was hands-down one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Every step brought new jaw-dropping scenery - from lush forests to epic glaciers. The views of Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam were surreal. What made it truly special was the incredible hospitality of the Sherpa people. Our guide was knowledgeable, kind, and patient, making sure we acclimatized safely and enjoyed every moment. I came home stronger, more grateful, and completely in awe of the Himalayas. This is not just a trek - it’s a transformation.

This trek had been on my bucket list for years, and it exceeded my expectations in every way. The trail is well-established, the views are unreal, and our group became like family by the end. Tea house stays were more comfortable than I expected, and the food was warm and hearty (Dal Bhat power 24 hour!). Seeing Everest Base Camp itself was emotional – to stand where climbers begin their journey is truly inspiring. I’ll never forget this experience.

This trek is tough, yes, but 100% worth the effort. The gradual ascent helped with acclimatization, and the guide’s experience was key. I loved every part – from crossing thrilling suspension bridges to sipping tea with mountain views in Namche Bazaar. Watching the stars above Dingboche, and later hiking to Kala Patthar for sunrise, are moments forever etched in my memory. Highly recommend training before coming, but also: embrace the journey. It’s magical.

What made this trek truly special was the connection with the local culture. Our guide and porter were from the Khumbu region and shared so many stories that made the trek more meaningful. The landscapes were incredible - Everest is just the cherry on top of a trek filled with glaciers, rivers, pine forests, and monasteries. This isn't just a hike; it's an immersion into the soul of the Himalayas. We came for the views but left with full hearts.
