Everest Expedition Overview

Embarking on the Everest Expedition (South Face) is the ultimate challenge for climbers worldwide. Standing at 8,848 meters (29,028 feet), Mount Everest-known as Sagarmatha in Nepali and Chomolungma in Tibetan-represents more than a mountain; it symbolizes human strength, endurance, and personal victory. As Sir Edmund Hillary once said, “It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves.”

The journey begins upon your arrival in Kathmandu, where we manage all official paperwork, including NMA authorization and necessary permits. After a short cultural exploration of the valley, we take a dramatic flight to Lukla, the gateway to the Khumbu Valley. From here, the expedition progresses through iconic villages such as Namche Bazaar and Dingboche, allowing for proper acclimatization and immersion in Sherpa culture.

Our team establishes Everest Base Camp (5,364m) as the central hub for training and preparation. Here, you’ll meet our experienced climbing Sherpas, cooks, and support crew. Daily routines include gear checks, oxygen system testing, weather briefings, and practice climbs. Ample time is devoted to rest and acclimatization, ensuring climbers are fully prepared for the ascent.

The climb itself follows the classic South Face route, with overnight stops at Camp I (6,065m), Camp II (6,500m), Camp III (7,200m), and Camp IV (7,910m). From here, we tackle the Khumbu Icefall, cross the Yellow Band, ascend the Geneva Spur, and ultimately face the legendary Hillary Step. Supplemental oxygen use begins at Camp III, and all movements are coordinated around the most favorable weather windows, typically during late April to late May.

Summit day starts before midnight, targeting a sunrise summit. Standing on top of the world, surrounded by the panoramic peaks of the Himalayas, is a moment of pure triumph. However, the descent is equally important, with careful planning to manage fatigue and avoid risks associated with the death zone above 8,000m.

Our success is built on the strength of our experienced and insured Sherpa support team, along with skilled cooks and porters. All staff receive fair wages, meals, and proper gear. We are deeply committed to sustainable practices, including solar energy use, eco-friendly waste disposal, and minimizing environmental impact at Base Camp.

The Everest climb is rich in history and heritage, from the first successful summit by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in 1953, to annual expeditions that continue to add to its legendary status. Climbers may encounter remnants of past expeditions, traverse glacial moraines, and gain insights into the spiritual life of the Khumbu region. The Everest summit has been achieved from both Nepal and Tibet (North Face), with the South being more commonly used despite its own challenges.

This expedition typically takes 55-60 days, including contingency and acclimatization days. Best climbing season is spring (April–May), though autumn is possible. Risks such as weather delays, altitude sickness, and route changes are inherent, so flexibility and careful planning are vital. All climbers must secure the appropriate permits, and extra days may be required depending on conditions.

In summary, the Everest Expedition is a life-defining journey, offering extreme adventure, natural beauty, cultural depth, and personal growth. From your arrival in Kathmandu to the summit and safe return, Sole Encounters Trekking Pvt. Ltd. ensures expert guidance, full logistical support, and a focus on your safety, success, and sustainability throughout.

After about 7 hours of walking and gaining 830 meters in elevation over 11–12 km of rocky and uneven terrain, you’ll reach Namche Bazaar. Today is an acclimatization day, where we take a short hike to the Everest Viewpoint at an elevation of 3,880m to help your body adjust to the altitude. The hike will take about 3-4 hours round-trip, covering a distance of 5-6 km. From the viewpoint, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of Mount EverestAma DablamLhotse, and other stunning peaks in the region.

Acclimatization is crucial to prevent altitude sickness as we gain higher elevations. It allows your body to gradually adjust to the reduced oxygen levels, ensuring a safer and more comfortable trek. After soaking in the views, we’ll descend back to Namche Bazaar to rest and allow your body to acclimatize further. The altitude gain for this hike is around 400 meters.

During your free time in Namche, you can enjoy activities like visiting the Sherpa Museum, learning about the region's culture, or exploring the local markets. There’s also an opportunity for last-minute shopping, where you can buy gear or souvenirs. This is a perfect time to relax and prepare for the next part of your trek.

Today, leaving Namche Bazaar, the trail follows scenic ridgelines with stunning views of Everest and surrounding peaks. After a descent to Phunki Tenga, where you’ll stop for lunch at a local teahouse, a steep uphill climb leads to Tengboche. The trek takes 6-7 hours with an altitude gain of around 500 meters. Tengboche is home to the region’s largest monastery, originally built in 1916 and rebuilt in 1989. This spiritual center hosts the vibrant Mani Rimdu Festival in October or November. The monastery, open daily from 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM with a small entrance fee (300–400 NPR), offers a majestic backdrop of Everest, Ama Dablam, and Lhotse-an unforgettable cultural and scenic highlight of today’s trek.

Today’s trek covers a mix of uphill, downhill, and flat terrain, so a slow and steady pace is essential as you continue to gain altitude. Enjoy a relaxing tea break in Debuche and stop for lunch in Pangboche, the last permanent village on the route. After 6-7 hours of walking and an ascent of about 550 meters over 10–11 km, you’ll reach Dingboche. This peaceful village at 4,410 meters is surrounded by dramatic mountain views and stone-walled fields, known for its high-altitude farming. You'll spend two nights here to acclimatize before continuing your ascent.

Today is an acclimatization day in Dingboche. To help your body adjust to the altitude, take a short hike to Nagarjun Hill (5,100m) or Chhukung Valley (4,730m), both offering breathtaking views of Makalu, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and other peaks. The hike takes 3–4 hours with an altitude gain of 300–700 meters, depending on the route. Afterward, return to Dingboche to rest, explore the village, and prepare for higher elevations. This "climb high, sleep low" strategy is key to preventing altitude sickness and ensuring a safer ascent.

Today’s trail gradually ascends through alpine landscapes with stunning views of Taboche and Cholatse. After crossing a glacial stream, you'll stop at Thukla for a break or lunch. A steep climb leads to the Trekkers’ Memorial at Thukla Pass (4,830m), a moving tribute to climbers who lost their lives on Everest. From there, the path continues over rocky, exposed terrain as the air thins and temperatures drop. After 5-6 hours of hiking and gaining about 500 meters in altitude, you’ll reach Lobuche-a small, wind-swept settlement near the Khumbu Glacier. Here, you’ll rest and have a chance to talk with your guide about the exciting trek planned for the next day to Everest Base Camp, ensuring you’re well prepared for the adventure ahead.

At Sole Encounters Trekking, we dedicate Day 13 to Day 52 (up to Day 58 if needed) for the crucial Everest climbing period (8,848m / 29,029ft). Safety is our top priority throughout this journey. During this time, climbers follow a carefully planned schedule of acclimatization rotations to higher camps (Camps I, II, and III), help establish and maintain high-altitude camps, and face the technical challenges of the Khumbu Icefall and Lhotse Face. You will always be part of a strong, supportive team, guided by our experienced Sherpa leaders who are there to help you every step of the way-no worries. It’s important to listen carefully, be honest about how you feel, and always follow instructions to move forward safely. After the unforgettable moment of reaching the summit, you’ll safely descend back to base camp. Our climbing schedule remains flexible and adapts to weather and individual progress to ensure your safety and success. This essential phase embodies the heart of the Everest expedition-testing your endurance, skill, and connection to the majestic Himalayas.

Today, you’ll leave Everest Base Camp after reflecting on your incredible achievement. The 6-hour descent to Pheriche (4,350m / 14,271ft) takes you through stunning glacial terrain with beautiful views of Ama Dablam and Lhotse. Dingboche offers a peaceful stop to rest and adjust to the lower altitude. You’ll stay in a cozy lodge, unwind, and prepare for the next stage of your descent. This marks the start of your journey back, filled with memories of the summit and the breathtaking Khumbu landscape.

After summiting Everest, most expedition companies guide climbers back down to Everest Base Camp to rest and recover. From there, the focus is on a safe and timely descent, with teams preparing to return quickly to Kathmandu. This ensures climbers avoid prolonged exposure to high altitudes and begin their journey home as soon as possible.

If you're flying out by helicopter directly from Base Camp, you’ll miss the classic walk back to Lukla-but we believe you’ll be happy to reach Kathmandu faster, making your way home sooner and safely, with unforgettable memories of the world’s highest peak.
