Weather can be unpredictable in the Himalayas, and flights from Kathmandu to Lukla (and back) can be affected by adverse weather conditions. In case of flight cancellations or delays, there are several options available to trekkers.

Firstly, it is important to note that flight cancellations or delays are relatively common in this region, particularly during the peak trekking seasons (spring and autumn). This is due to the unpredictable weather conditions, particularly in the early mornings when most flights are scheduled.

If your flight is cancelled or delayed, we will  normally make arrangements for you to stay in a hotel in Kathmandu until the next available flight. In some cases, it may be possible to take a helicopter to Lukla, although this option is more expensive and not always guaranteed.

Alternatively, if you have more time and prefer a more adventurous option, you can consider trekking from Jiri to Lukla. This is the traditional route to Everest Base Camp, and takes around 6-7 days. While this option is more time-consuming, it is a great way to experience the local culture and scenery of the region.

It is also worth noting that while flights are the most common way to reach Lukla, it is possible to take a bus or private car from Kathmandu to Jiri and then trek to Lukla from there. This option is cheaper than flying, but also more time-consuming.

Overall, while flight cancellations or delays can be frustrating, there are several alternative options available to ensure that you can still complete your trek to Everest Panorama. We will provide guidance and support to ensure that you can enjoy your trip to the fullest.

What are the chances of getting altitude sickness?

Altitude sickness, also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), is a common concern for trekkers in high-altitude regions like the Gokyo Renjo La Pass trek. The trek involves ascending to an altitude of over 5,000 meters, which puts trekkers at a higher risk of altitude sickness.

However, if the trek is done at a moderate pace with proper acclimatization, the chances of getting altitude sickness can be minimized. It is recommended to take at least 2-3 days for acclimatization during the trek and to drink plenty of water and fluids to stay hydrated. It's also recommended to avoid alcohol and smoking during the trek as they can increase the risk of altitude sickness.

If a trekker experiences symptoms of altitude sickness, such as headache, dizziness, fatigue, nausea, and loss of appetite, it's important to inform the guide immediately and take necessary steps such as rest, drinking plenty of fluids, and descending to a lower altitude if necessary. In severe cases, immediate medical attention should be sought.

Most guesthouses have shared bathrooms with hot water showers, but you may need to pay extra for hot water or the use of a private bathroom. However, as you go higher in altitude, the availability of hot water and shower facilities may become more limited or non-existent, and you may need to rely on baby wipes or a basic wash with a basin of warm water. It is always advisable to carry wet wipes and hand sanitizers for hygiene purposes.

Is it possible to do laundry on the trek?

Yes, it is possible to do laundry on the trek. Most tea houses and lodges offer laundry services for a fee. However, keep in mind that due to the remote location, washing machines may not be available and laundry may be done by hand. It is also important to note that it may take some time for your clothes to dry in the high altitude and cold weather, so it's best to plan ahead and bring enough clothes for the duration of your trek.

What happens if I get sick or injured while trekking?

If you get sick or injured while trekking, your guide will first assess your condition and provide any necessary first aid. If the situation requires further medical attention, you will be taken to the nearest medical facility. In case of an emergency, you will be evacuated by helicopter to Kathmandu or a nearby hospital.

It is important to have travel insurance that covers emergency medical evacuation and repatriation in case of a serious injury or illness. Your travel insurance should also cover the cost of medical treatment and hospitalization expenses. Therefore, make sure to purchase comprehensive travel insurance before embarking on the trek.

What happens if I have symptoms of altitude sickness on the trek?

If you have symptoms of altitude sickness on the trek, the first thing you should do is inform your guide. They will assess your condition and determine the best course of action. This may involve resting for a day, descending to a lower altitude, or in severe cases, arranging for emergency evacuation by helicopter. It is important to listen to your body and not push yourself too hard, as this can exacerbate the symptoms. It is also important to stay well hydrated and to avoid alcohol and smoking while on the trek, as these can increase the risk of altitude sickness.

If I am sick can I continue the trek next day after a day of rest?

If you are sick or experiencing symptoms of altitude sickness, it is not recommended to continue trekking the next day even after a day of rest. If the flight is delayed due to unfavorable weather conditions, the itinerary may need to be adjusted accordingly. The delays can last for hours or even a few days, depending on the situation.

If your flight from Lukla is delayed, your guide will arrange for your accommodation in Lukla and make alternative arrangements for your return flights to Kathmandu. If you have a tight schedule, it is recommended that you keep a few extra days in Kathmandu at the end of the trek to account for any unforeseen delays.

If the flight from Kathmandu is delayed, the same process applies. Your guide will keep you informed about the status of the flight and make necessary arrangements for your accommodation and transfer to the airport. It is always better to arrive in Kathmandu a few days prior to the trek to account for any flight delays.

Will I be flying from Ramechhap or Kathmandu to reach Lukla?

It depends on the time of year and weather conditions. In peak trekking seasons when there is heavy air traffic, flights to Lukla may be diverted to Ramechhap, which is around 130 kilometers away from Kathmandu. However, during other times of the year, flights may operate directly from Kathmandu to Lukla. Your trekking agency or airline company can provide you with updated information on the flight status and departure location.

What is your cancellation policy? How about other terms and conditions?

However, most trekking and travel companies have their own cancellation policies and terms and conditions, which may vary depending on several factors such as the duration of the trip, the destination, and the time of cancellation.

It's essential to carefully read and understand the cancellation policy and terms and conditions of the tour company you're considering booking with before making a reservation. Generally, cancellation policies may involve losing a certain percentage of the trip cost depending on how close the cancellation is to the departure date.

Terms and conditions usually outline important details such as payment policies, health and fitness requirements, travel documentation, and liability waivers. Make sure to review these carefully to avoid any misunderstandings or surprises during your trip.

These seasons offer clear skies, good visibility, and moderate temperatures, making it perfect for trekking. The monsoon season from June to August brings heavy rain, and the winter season from December to February can bring snow, making the trek challenging and risky. The total distance of the Gokyo Lake Renjo La Pass Trek is approximately 120 kilometers (75 miles) long. The distance covered each day during the trek varies depending on the route taken, but generally ranges from 7-16 kilometers (4-10 miles) per day.

Altitude sickness, also known as acute mountain sickness (AMS), is a common condition that occurs when a person ascends to high altitudes too quickly, without allowing the body to acclimatize properly. It is caused by a lack of oxygen in the air, as the air pressure decreases at higher altitudes. The symptoms of AMS can range from mild to severe, and can include headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and shortness of breath. In severe cases, it can lead to life-threatening conditions such as high altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) and high altitude cerebral edema (HACE). During the summer season (June to August), the weather is generally warm and humid, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F) at lower elevations. However, this is also the monsoon season, and there may be heavy rainfall and occasional landslides, making trekking difficult and potentially dangerous.
