Warmly Welcome to the Mardi Himal Trek - A Hidden Gem in the Annapurna Region of Nepal!
Nestled in the heart of Nepal, a land of ancient culture, majestic peaks, and vibrant traditions, the Mardi Himal Trek offers the perfect introduction to trekking in the Annapurna region of the Himalayas. Ideal for beginner trekkers, this short and moderately challenging journey is a great way to learn about hiking in Nepal, experience its incredible diversity, and immerse yourself in the beauty of the outdoors.
The trek typically lasts 6 to 8 days, beginning in the peaceful lakeside city of Pokhara, known as Nepal’s adventure hub. From there, a scenic drive takes you to the trailhead, where the adventure begins. The route passes through lush rhododendron forests, terraced hillsides, and traditional Gurung and Magar villages, offering close interactions with local culture and daily life. As you ascend higher, you'll be treated to dramatic mountain scenery, with close-up views of Mardi Himal (5,587m), Machhapuchhre (Fishtail, 6,993m), Annapurna South (7,219m), and Hiunchuli (6,441m). The trail reaches a maximum elevation of around 4,500 meters, making it accessible yet rewarding.
Historically a little-known yak herder’s route, Mardi Himal remained off the radar until recent years. Today, it offers a peaceful alternative to the more crowded trails like the Annapurna Base Camp or Everest Base Camp, making it ideal for trekkers seeking solitude and raw Himalayan beauty.
Your journey begins in Kathmandu, a city steeped in spiritual history, colorful architecture, and buzzing energy. After exploring its temples and markets, you’ll travel to Pokhara, where lakeside charm meets mountain views, creating the perfect setting to start and end your trek.
The best seasons for this trek are February to June and September to December, when the skies are clear, the views are sharp, and the trails are vibrant with life. From cultural discovery to mountain adventure, the Mardi Himal Trek offers a perfect balance of both.

Today: Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, you'll be warmly welcomed and transferred to your hotel. After settling in, explore Kathmandu’s iconic sites like Durbar Square, Pashupatinath, Boudhanath, and Swayambhunath. If you arrive early and wish to go sightseeing, we can assist with a guide and transport for an extra cost. You can also explore Thamel, the main tourist hub, and get ready for your Mardi Himal Trek.
Free luggage storage is available at your hotel if needed. You’ll also find money exchange counters, ATMs, and plenty of shops nearby where you can hire or buy trekking gear. In the evening, attend a trek briefing to finalize plans and prepare for the adventure ahead.
Today: After a scenic 25-minute flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara, enjoy a 1-hour drive to Phedi (1,130m), the starting point of your trek. From here, begin a 4 to 5-hour uphill hike to Pothana (1,990m / 6,529ft), passing through forested trails, stone staircases, and some flat sections along terraced fields.
Pothana, historically used by local traders and yak herders, is now a peaceful trekking village offering beautiful views of Machapuchare (Fishtail) and Annapurna South. The trail is mostly shaded and moderately challenging, making it a rewarding first day of your trek.
In terms of climate, spring and autumn offer mild weather and clear skies; winter brings cold mornings but good visibility, while the monsoon season (summer) can make the trail wet and slippery.
Today: Embark on a scenic 5-hour trek from Pothana (1,990m) to Low Camp (2,950m / 9,678ft) through lush forests and gradually ascending trails. Along the way, enjoy glimpses of towering Himalayan peaks as the landscape shifts from rhododendron-covered woodlands to open alpine terrain.
Low Camp, nestled deep in the forest, offers basic teahouse accommodations with simple comforts. In the past, this area was only used by local herders and remained untouched by tourism. Today, it has slowly evolved into a peaceful stop for trekkers on the Mardi Himal route, providing shelter and warm meals in a serene, natural setting. Despite limited facilities, its charm lies in its isolation and the raw beauty of the surrounding landscape, making it a memorable resting point in the heart of the Annapurna region.
Today: Begin a 5 to 6-hour trek from Low Camp (2,950m) to High Camp (3,550m / 11,646ft) through stunning alpine terrain. The trail steadily ascends, offering expansive mountain views and a noticeable shift in vegetation as you reach higher elevations. This peaceful route blends adventure and tranquility, revealing the raw beauty of the Annapurna region.
You’ll need to stop for lunch along the way, so plan accordingly. Be sure to carry everything you need for the day, including water, snacks, layers, and sun protection. Upon reaching High Camp, surrounded by majestic peaks, you’ll find a quiet resting point and a rewarding sense of achievement in the heart of the Himalayas.
Today: Hike to Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500m / 14,763ft) and return to Low Camp (2,950m / 9,678ft) in a 5 to 6-hour round trip. The trail is steep and challenging, so go slowly and follow your guide’s advice on what to carry. Enjoy stunning views of Mardi Himal and Annapurna peaks. After returning to High Camp, have lunch, then descend slowly to Low Camp. Spend the night there, surrounded by forest and mountain serenity.
Today: Begin the final day of your Mardi Himal trek with a 6-hour descent from Low Camp to Lumre (1,206m / 3,957ft) or Sidhing village, passing through scenic forests, small settlements, and terraced landscapes. After reaching the road access point, drive back to Pokhara, where your trek officially ends.
Back in Pokhara, unwind by the peaceful lakeside, enjoy local cafes, or take part in activities like paragliding, boating, or massage treatments. If you need ideas, guides, or bookings, feel free to ask us—we’re always here to help make the most of your post-trek stay.
Today: Bid farewell to Pokhara as you travel back to Kathmandu by tourist bus, which departs around 7:00 AM. The 7-hour journey follows scenic river valleys and hillsides. While the road can be bumpy and winding in places, it offers one last chance to enjoy Nepal’s diverse landscapes.
If you prefer, you can fly back to Kathmandu for a quicker and more comfortable option (available at extra cost). You may also choose to extend your stay in Pokhara-whether for relaxation or adventure. Just let us know in advance, and we’ll gladly assist with flights, hotels, or activities as per your needs.
Today: Your unforgettable Mardi Himal Trek comes to an end. As you prepare for your final departure, we hope you leave with lasting memories of the mountains, culture, and people of Nepal. Wishing you a safe journey home, and may the spirit of the Himalayas stay with you until we meet again. Farewell and Namaste!

The trails include steep ascents, stone staircases, and some narrow ridge paths at higher elevations. Altitude gain is gradual, with the highest point at Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500m). No prior high-altitude experience is required, but pre-trek physical preparation like walking, hiking, or cardio is recommended
Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)
TIMS (Trekkers’ Information Management System) card
These are mandatory for all trekkers and can be arranged by your trekking agency.
The best seasons are:
Spring (March to May): Rhododendron blooms, clear skies, and mild temperatures
Autumn (September to November): Crisp air, stable weather, and excellent mountain views
Trekking is also possible in winter (Dec-Feb) with colder temperatures and fewer crowds. Monsoon season (June to August) is not ideal due to heavy rain and slippery trails.
Yes, solo trekking is allowed on the Mardi Himal route, and some independent trekkers do it. However, hiring a guide and/or porter is highly recommended for navigation, safety, local insight, and support on challenging trail sections.
Accommodation during the trek consists of basic teahouses and lodges. Rooms are usually twin-shared with simple bedding, and bathrooms may be shared. At lower altitudes, some teahouses offer limited Wi-Fi and hot showers, while higher up, facilities become more basic.
Teahouses serve a variety of Nepali and international dishes, including:
Dal Bhat (lentil soup with rice and vegetables)
Noodles, pasta, fried rice, soups, and eggs
Pancakes, toast, and porridge for breakfast
Most food is vegetarian, and while meat may be available, it's often not recommended at high altitudes due to hygiene concerns.
Start physical preparation 3-4 weeks in advance with activities like:
Hiking with a backpack
Cardio (running, cycling, or stair climbing)
Strength training and endurance workouts
Also, ensure you’re mentally prepared for basic accommodations, changing weather, and long trekking days. Break in your trekking boots before the trek.
Yes, but limited.

Amazing experience with smooth booking and great guides. The Mardi Himal trek is incredible on its own, but with Sole Encounters Trekking Pvt Ltd, it’s safe, enjoyable, and tailored to your needs. We found Sole Encounters through Google, and the booking was easy. The owner is very helpful, offering clear planning, packing lists, and a pre-trip meeting. I recommend paying upfront to avoid extra charges. For added comfort, consider room upgrades, especially in the first few nights, as the trek gets tougher with altitude. Sole Encounters ensures you're well taken care of throughout the entire journey.

The Mardi Himal trek was a once-in-a-lifetime experience and I’m already planning my next: the Annapurna Base Camp Trek! The Himalayas keep calling me back. Prem Guide recommended by a colleague, was incredible from start to finish. He responded quickly to all my questions, met me at the Kathmandu airport, and even suggested a great dinner spot. The Kathmandu city tour was amazing, with visits to UNESCO sites, and Prem later organized exciting activities and tours in Pokhara.I’m truly grateful for Prem’s outstanding service and can’t thank him enough for making this trip so memorable.

I had an amazing experience with sole adventures trekking. The guides offered smooth experience throughout the journey. It's an unforgettable experience for me. The Mardi Himal Trek was a peaceful, off-the-beaten-path experience that completely exceeded my expectations. If you’re looking for stunning Himalayan views without the crowds of more popular trails, this is the perfect choice. If you want to experience the grandeur of the Himalayas in a quieter setting, Mardi Himal is a hidden treasure. The trek is short (5–7 days), scenic, and spiritually refreshing. I would 100% recommend it to those who love mountains and minimal crowds.Mr. David Laurent
