π Why Choose the Gokyo Lakes Route?
Most people only walk on the main trail to Everest Base Camp. But the Gokyo Lakes route gives you a much bigger adventure. Here is why our team at Sole Encounters Adventures loves this trek:
- The Five Sacred Lakes: You will see a chain of bright blue lakes hidden in the mountains. They look like sparkling jewels in the gray rock.
- Fewer People: The path up to Gokyo is quiet. You can enjoy the peace of nature without walking in a long line of tourists.
- The Big View from Gokyo Ri: Gokyo Ri is a big hill. From the top, you can see four of the tallest mountains on Earth at the same time! You will see Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu.
- The Thrill of Cho La Pass: This is a high and icy mountain pass. Crossing it feels like a real alpine expedition.
- The Full Loop: You get to see two different valleys in one single trip.

Day 7: Reach the Magical Gokyo Lakes
- Walking time: 4 to 5 hours
- Altitude: 4,790 meters
Today is a beautiful day. We climb up next to a giant glacier made of ice and rock. Soon, we see the first blue lake. Then we pass the second lake. Finally, we reach the third lake, where the village of Gokyo sits right on the water's edge.
Day 8: Climb Gokyo Ri and Rest
- Walking time: 3 to 4 hours
- Altitude: 5,483 meters (at the top)
We wake up very early before the sun comes up. We climb up the steep hill of Gokyo Ri. It is hard work, but the view from the top is amazing. You can see the largest glacier in Nepal and huge mountain peaks. We spend the rest of the day resting by the lake.
Day 9: Hike to Thagnak

- Walking time: 7 to 8 hours
- Altitude: 5,420 meters (Pass) / 4,830 meters (Dzongla)
This is the hardest and most exciting day! We start walking in the dark. We climb over rocks and sometimes walk on slippery snow and ice. At the top of Cho La Pass, we celebrate and take photos. Then, we walk down carefully to Dzongla.
Day 11: Trek from Dzongla to Lobuche
- Walking time: 4 to 5 hours
- Altitude: 4,940 meters
We walk along a high grassy ridge. The views of the sharp peak of Ama Dablam are wonderful today. Soon, our path rejoins the busy main trail to Everest. We stay the night in Lobuche.

- Walking time: 7 to 8 hours

Today is the big day! We walk along the rocky edge of the Khumbu Glacier to Gorak Shep. After a quick lunch, we walk for two more hours to reach Everest Base Camp. You will stand where real mountain climbers camp before trying to climb to the top of the world! We walk back to Gorak Shep to sleep.
Day 13: Climb Kala Patthar and Trek to Pheriche
- Walking time: 6 to 7 hours
- Altitude: 5,545 meters (Kala Patthar) / 4,240 meters (Pheriche)
We wake up early to climb Kala Patthar. This is the highest point of our trek. From here, you get the best view of the black rock of Mount Everest. After going down, we pack our bags and hike down to the warmer village of Pheriche.
Day 14: Trek from Pheriche back to Namche Bazaar
- Walking time: 6 to 7 hours
- Altitude: 3,440 meters
Walking down is much easier because there is more oxygen in the air. We hike back down through the forests and arrive back in Namche Bazaar. You can celebrate with a hot shower and a bakery treat!
Day 15: Trek from Namche back to Lukla
- Walking time: 6 to 7 hours
- Altitude: 2,860 meters
This is our last day of walking. We say goodbye to the big mountains as we follow the river back to Lukla. Tonight, we have a fun dinner with our guides and porters to thank them.
Day 16: Fly back to Kathmandu
We take an early morning flight back to Kathmandu. The rest of the day is yours to relax, shop for souvenirs, or get a massage for your tired legs.
Day 17: Extra Day for Flights
Sometimes the weather in the mountains is bad, and planes cannot fly. We keep this day extra just in case of flight delays. If our flight was on time, you can use this day to tour the ancient temples of Kathmandu.
Day 18: Goodbye Nepal!
Our trip is over. We will drive you to the airport for your flight back home. You will leave with memories that last a lifetime!
β°οΈ How Hard is This Trek?
This trek is rated as strenuous. It is harder than the regular Everest Base Camp hike. You do not need to be a professional mountain climber. You do not need ropes or ice axes. However, you must be in very good physical shape. You will walk for many hours every day up steep hills. The air is very thin, which makes walking feel twice as hard.
At Sole Encounters Adventures, we recommend that you start training at least two to three months before your trip. You can train by running, swimming, or walking up stairs with a heavy backpack.
π Food and Shelter on the Trail
During the trek, you will stay in local mountain lodges called teahouses.
- The Rooms: The rooms are simple and clean. They usually have two twin beds with pillows and blankets. It gets very cold at night, so you will still need a warm sleeping bag.
- The Food: The food is fresh and delicious! You can eat traditional Nepali meals like Dal Bhat (rice, lentil soup, and veggies). They also serve western food like pancakes, eggs, pasta, and potatoes.
- Drinking Water: You must drink lots of water to stay healthy in the thin air. We recommend using water purification tablets or filters to make the local water safe to drink.
π What Should You Pack?
Packing the right gear is very important for your safety and comfort. Here are the most important things to bring:
- Good Hiking Boots: Make sure they are broken in before you arrive so you do not get blisters.
- Layers of Clothing: Bring warm thermal underwear, a fleece jacket, and a heavy down jacket for the freezing nights.
- A Warm Sleeping Bag: Rated for at least -15°C (5°F).
- Trekking Poles: These help save your knees when walking down steep hills.
- Microspikes: Small metal spikes you can slip onto your boots. These are very helpful for crossing the icy Cho La Pass safely.
