Makalu is the fifth highest mountain in the world, standing tall at 8,463 meters (27,766 feet). It is located in the Mahalangur Himalayas, 19 kilometers (12 miles) southeast of Mount Everest.
Although it is an 8,000+-meter peak, Makalu is an isolated destination for Trekking in Nepal.
On May 15, 1955, French climbers Lionel Terray and Jean Couzy made the first ascent of Makalu. The climb used the same north ridge route used by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay on their 1953 first ascent of Everest.
Makalu Trek is a challenging endeavor that calls for extensive mountaineering knowledge and physical preparedness. It is one of the more expensive 8,000-meter summits to climb because of its remote location.
During Makalu Trek, you will go through some of the last remaining untouched forest and alpine meadows in Nepal as you ascend, passing through rhododendron woods (particularly beautiful in the spring when the flowers blossom in amazing shades of red, purple, pink, and white) and cloud forests. Makalu Trek offers the most spectacular mountain views, and you will get to experience unique Tibetan culture and food.
We meet you when you arrive at Nepal's international airport and take you to your accommodation so you can get ready for the hike and see Kathmandu.
We visit several historically significant sites on our tour of the capital city today, including Pashupatinath Temple, Kathmandu Durbar Square, Patan Durbar Square, Boudhanath Stupa, and Swyambhunath Stupa.
We will also prepare for the hike by assembling all the necessary equipment, including a down jacket, sleeping bag, climbing boots, crampons, an ice axe, etc.
The hike begins with an hour-long flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar. You will get to witness the beautiful mountains, landscapes, and ethnic people of the area.
We will drive to Chichila from Khadbari. From Chichila, it is a short trek through villages and magnificent woodlands. Finally, we arrive at a crest with amazing views on both sides, with Num at the end.
The hike for the day begins with a steep descent through forests and fields to reach the Barun River. We then cross the river and make an equally steep rise on the opposite side to enter Makalu Barun National Park.
On this day, we reach a hill flanked to the east and west by rivers. Then we climb the slope, passing past villages and paddy fields before arriving in Tashi Gaun. The first spectacular, panoramic vistas of the Himalayas appear.
Today is one of the more difficult days because the path rises steeply to higher levels. The trail becomes steeper when we pass through woodlands, a brook, and a ridge. The path then winds through grazing pasture, stone steps, and a few lakes before reaching the top of a ridge. Khongma Danda is a short distance from the ridge.
Because Kongma is already 3600m, you will have an easy rest day. It is ideal for acclimatization purposes. You can go on a day trip to thoroughly acclimate. It's also an excellent vantage point.
We follow an equally beautiful track from Khongma to the foothills of Shipton Pass. Ghungru La is reached by walking along the ridge via a Rhododendron forest. A short descent from here leads to a lake and then to Keke la pass. After crossing the pass, we descend into the Dobate Valley.
Due to a two hour high and rigorous climb, today's journey is fairly demanding. Following that, a delightful walk will serve to gain altitude and eventually arrive at Yangle Kharka.
The trail now climbs through grasslands and woodlands, providing tempting vistas of several mountain peaks. Yak Kharka is a day-grazing meadow for yaks and other animals.
The trail begins flat and eventually descends to a river from Yak Kharka. The base camp is located on the river's western bank. The trail offers views of glaciers and snow-capped mountains. The base offers a breathtaking view of Makalu Mountain's southern flank. Other mountains visible from the camp are Baruntse, Kali Himal, Chamlang, and Makalu II.
On this day, we explore Makalu Base Camp, our destination. It is a desolate landscape with the Barun glacier beyond it. We might take in the panoramic views of Everest and Lhotse, or we can explore the region's lakes and glaciers.
A short climb to Baruntse Base Camp is also possible. Later in the day, we travel to Yangle Kharka. After a few hours of ascent, the track travels along a flat terrain before descending to Yangle Kharka.
We travel from Yangle Kharka to Dobate across rock falls, forests, and valleys. From there, we walk along the Barun River before climbing steeply to a rocky terrain that leads to Dobate. We spend the night here.
We begin our day early and travel through lush rhododendron and fir forests to the base of Keke la pass. Then we ascend Keke La pass, then Shipton La and Ghungru La pass before arriving at Khongma.
We descend from the Khongma peak, passing through Rhododendron trees, rocky areas, and grasslands on our way to Tashi Gaun. We travel from Tashi Gaun via terraced farms with mountain views. We descend to the Arun River and make our way to Seduwa, where we spend the night at a local lodge.
We leave Seduwa via a trail that winds up and down through lush woodlands before arriving at Num.
We retrace our steps back to Chichila from Num. It is the final vantage point for seeing the Himalayas. Then we go to Tumlingtar. We spend the night in Tumlingtar at a small lodge.
From Tumlingtar, we fly to Kathmandu. You can spend the evening wandering around Kathmandu's tourism attractions.
After breakfast, the trek comes to an end. We will be able to transfer you to the airport.
